Stop! Hey, What’s That Sound? is a narrative of the tumultuous 1960s through the late 1970s and the movements that were spawned.

Social unrest was huge in the USA. Advocates, both peaceful and radical, embraced or resisted civil and human rights, women’s rights, free speech, anti-war protests, and the peace and love movement. A generational conscience on ethical and social issues was active.

The Times They Are A-Changin

The unpopular Vietnam War was a catalyst for national division. The assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. shocked the nation and the world. How could this happen in the land of the free and home of the brave?

Among the largest movements of the day was the Peace and Love Generation. Lead author, Dave Hoyt, moved to the Fillmore and then Haight (Ashbury) district of San Francisco in 1966 and provides a rare look into the beginning and progression of this movement. As a seeker of truth, he also investigated several religious paths and shares his findings.

Amidst social hopes and dreams rising and falling, a mysterious phenomenon occurred, giving birth to un-churched followers of Jesus, called ‘Street Christians’ and later ‘Jesus People’. Unattached to material things they went to the streets of the USA, Europe, Australia, and beyond proclaiming “Jesus is alive”. The impact is still being felt in evangelistic circles, small or home groups, discipleship training, and contemporary worship and outreach music.

Protests in the 1960s-70s were supported by millions. Pain and distrust lingered. The majority of social ills were not solved, but something brought America through these turbulent days. Is it possible, God did visit? You be the judge. What’s before you is what we saw, experienced and offer as a written record.
